The connection between the vertical and horizontal pieces of the swing is crucial. The only area in which these two planes co-exist is from approximately waist high to waist high. It is the only space where golfers are connected. Beyond that zone, all golfers become disconnected. That's why knock down, half shots etc. are so popular, the clubs do not travel beyond that length.
As a drill, hit shots from waist high. Feel your arms and hands move in concert with your turn. If the turn dominates, the vertical, (arms, hands, club and shoulders), must follow that turn. That feeling is connection, or what is called a one piece swing.
