    Full Shots: Direction Over Distance

PGA Pro Steve Sewell flips the priorities for full shots: direction outranks distance. Aim true and you stop forcing your swing to compensate.

Aiming a full golf shot at The Golf Place

Last blog I addressed distance and direction in regards to the short game. Now I discuss distance and direction relative to full golf shots. The Ds are reversed!

Quality players are very concerned about direction, much more than distance. Unless you need to carry 100 yards over a jungle valley or water, the distance is normally less of a concern than the direction in which the ball is travelling. Logically we would prefer a shot be short and safe rather than long, errant and ending in a difficult or unplayable area.

Because our focus or priorities change dependent upon whether the shot is short game or long game, it is important to know these important issues and focus on them before hitting a ball on course, or when we are practicing.

During lessons I hear comments regarding score. Great, score is important. But so often the conversation includes statements such as, "except for 5, 6 and 7 where I made triple bogies, the day was great!". Except for! Let's remove those! Paying attention to direction first regarding full shots, is a big step toward improving. Remember, if you misalign a shot, you must make a bad shot to hit the actual target you wish to hit!!! If you hit where you're aimed, it will be offline, so you are demanding a bad swing to achieve other than where you are aiming your club.
