You've heard the comment, swing through the ball. It means, do not strike at the ball, rather move from the top of the backswing to the top of the forward swing. This is similar to how blind people play golf; obviously, they don't see it, so they just make a smooth swing from top to top.
Assuming you make a good swing, when you're playing golf, don't swing to the ball hoping for good contact, instead focus on making a smooth, round swing to the typical, magazine cover finish. There's a reason it's always shown as the classic pose, because it's the assumed, anticipated finish of a good golf swing!
