Not word people like to think about; practice. It's kind of like homework, staying late at work or in high school, doing our before practice workouts. It doesn't need to be that way though.

According to educators, it takes 21 applications of whatever we were engaged in, for it to become a routine, or habit. That does not mean a serious golfer was required to hit 500 balls for each application. It does not involve an inordinate amount of ball striking. Hitting 20 balls patiently and with your swing thought in mind, was worthwhile and counted as one application. Take a break, drink a cup of water, think about what you just did on the range, then go after it again; maybe play 9; that's another application.

As long as you are following a good swing system and paying attention, the practice was worthwhile. When you practice, there is more to consider than swing mechanics. You need to be aware of attitude in terms of mental standing. What works for you, talking, not talking, implementing a long, or a fast pre swing routine? Should you practice more or play more? Should you be more specific about swing mechanics or rely on basic mechanics and natural instincts? Do you prefer to play your natural draw all the time, or occasionally hit a hold shot to negate the draw? All players must deal with these factors. When you learn your style, practice it, and attempt to maintain that level.

I have given many lessons and have seen many golfers with good golf swings lose their games because they decided to change their systems, standards and their styles. Don't be swayed, stay the course. Success in golf is fleeting as in everything else, but let's not shorten the ride. Good golf is repetition and that mantra will win for you.

    Keep Practicing the Fundamentals

New lesson bookings are currently paused. Steve's article remains available for education, and ordinary simulator bay rentals do not include instruction.
