Let's get to the true goal of our golf swing efforts: to make a proper swing which yields a repeatable, good golf shot. For all the best, from Bobby Jones, to Ben Hogan to Arnold Palmer to Tiger Woods and now Scottie Scheffler; the basics have been the basics and each one of these very successful players has made the same moves from a fundamentals standpoint.

All of them and all their competition did the same things in their swings because sports are based in physics. They all did a similar pre swing routine, then implemented a good turn with their core and coordinated it with a compatible vertical swing component. Did these golfers individualize, personalize, make little adjustments, yes. We all make our grips a touch stronger, then a week later weaken them if necessary, try fading the ball, then deciding to allow our natural draw become our routine shot strategy. We decide to move the ball back in our stance, then put a little more weight on the left or right, pre swing. We focus on driving our back knee into the ball, then reconsider and prefer to feel our hip fire forward for bigger distance. These are all personal adjustments of the basic swing. Do not get swayed or hung up on these personal aspects. You need to focus on fundamental components, then make it personal.

Whether I am instructing a true beginner to golf or a budding Tour pro who has already won events at a regional level and is looking to go big time: I review the basics, then address the details of those basics.

First I review or teach the pre swing, GASP, Grip, Alignment, Stance and Position of the ball within that stance. Once that's good we move to horizontal: core, turn, pivot, delivery, coil - uncoil, weight transfer and many other terms used to describe this move. When that's good, the vertical plane is addressed. Vertical plane is the swing plane, path, hands, club, shoulders and chest moving in a fairly vertical, up and down motion. If that's good I work toward coordinating those two planes; horizontal and vertical. That's the complete system whether you're great or seeking to be great. That's what I call getting right down to it!
