When I give a lesson it's a learning experience for me as well. Anyone can learn a new way to communicate, a new drill, a better way to make a specific move. Today I'm going to share how to maintain the vertical plane, several ways! To quote my long time, famous golf instructor, Bill Strausbaugh: "for those of us who dare to teach, we should never cease to learn".
When we set up in the address position, our arms form a V in front of our chest. If we make a proper shoulder turn, staying on plane, the V stays in front of our chest ALWAYS! When we pause at the top of our backswing, then complete the swing, and at the end, the V is still there in front of you.
This move means the club remains in front of you rather than going horizontal, under your shoulders, off plane, laid off and so on. If the club stays on plane you have an excellent chance of coordinating it with your fabulous pivot!
Many people do not truly understand the commonly used golf phrases. One of those phrases is: hit the ball from inside to out. That's true but only halfway stated. Part B to that statement is: inside and PARALLEL! The club remains in front of you and does not go around, but up. Since it goes up, (the ferris wheel, windmill), it obviously does not go around, and the club will remain on, or parallel, to our intended shot line.

In terms of swing thoughts, this may be a good one: Up, Down, Up, Up. When the shoulders turn and arms go up on the backswing, that is up one. Down…
